The Andromeda Strain

Rating ***/*****, or 7/10

Classic 'viral contagion' type science fiction film about the aftermath of a sudden and mysterious outbreak of an alien virus in a small American town which leaves very few survivors. Scientists in an isolated and highly secured underground research facility are brought in to examine it, which soon turns deadly when the virus appearently breaks free inside the compound, forcing the scientists to race against time to contain it and save their own skin in the process. The film's greatest pro, scientific accuracy, in also its greatest con, since it makes the movie slow paced, even dull, at times while also being hard to follow for the more simple audience members. However, the suspenseful scenes inside the closed off facility where the protagonists are struggling for their lives make up for it for the most part. From the mind of Michael Crichton (author of Jurassic Park), both his first novel and his first adapted script (and in the same year no less). Director Robert Wise would return to the science fiction genre with Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979.
